Perovskite photovoltaics (solar cells and photodetectors) have invoked extraordinary attentions in both academic and industrial sectors in the past years. In this study, we report the development and investigation of novel CH3NH3PbI3: x Nd3+(where x = 0, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, and 5.0 mol%) perovskite hybrid materials, which was never reported so far. Systematically studies indicate that Pb2+ is indeed partially substituted by an inequivalent neodymium (Nd3+); the resultant CH3NH3PbI3: x Nd3+ perovskite hybrids possess the typical tetragonal perovskite crystal structure, which is the same as that of pristine CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite hybrid does. However, solution-processed CH3NH3PbI3: x Nd3+ perovskite hybrid materials exhibit significantly improved and balanced charge carrier mobilities, and superior film quality with dramatically reduced trap-states and pin-holes. As a result, perovskite photovoltaics fabricated by solution-processed CH3NH3PbI3: x Nd3+ (x=0.5 mol%) thin film exhibits significantly reduced photocurrent hysteresis and a power conversion efficiency of 21.15%, which is more than 20% enhancement as compared with that by pristine CH3NH3PbI3 thin film. Moreover, operated at room temperature, perovskite photovoltaics fabricated by solution-processed CH3NH3PbI3: x Nd3+ (x=0.5 mol%) thin film exhibits the photodetectivities of ~ 1014 cm Hz1/2 W-1 from 375 nm to 800 nm, with a linear dynamic range over 100 dB. All these results indicate that our work opens a new window for tuning the electronic properties of the growing family of CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite via inequivalent doping for boosting device performance of perovskite photovoltaics.
