The use of sodium sulfite to form adducts has long been used to purify aldehydes and cyclic ketones. This reaction has now been modified to create a convenient aqueous extraction procedure to remove aldehydes from mixtures with a wide variety of compatible functional groups. The procedure is fast and highly efficient and tolerates nearly all functionality tested to date.
