The United States Patent and Trademark Office cooperates with participating patent offices across the globe to streamline and fast track examination of patent applications through the Patent Prosecution Highway (“PPH”). Essentially, when an innovator receives a final ruling from a first patent office that at least one claim is allowed, the innovator may request fast track examination of corresponding claim(s) in a second patent office that participates in the PPH program. This allows time and cost savings for innovators on a tight budget who seek patent protection in multiple jurisdictions. This streamlined process has become even more streamlined with the recent formation of the Global PPH and IP5 PPH programs. These programs, participating jurisdictions, and their cost savings potentials for small chemical companies seeking to develop a patent portfolio in a global marketplace will be reviewed.
