Capillary electrophoresis and capillary gel electrophoresis are integral to the separation and characterization of proteins.  These techniques can be used for a variety of separation mechanisms, including sieving and affinity interactions, and offer several advantages, such as low sample volume consumption, high resolution separations, and rapid analysis times.  Phospholipid nanogels are harnessed to improve protein analyses through nanogel patterning in microchannels.  The stationary nanogel zones can be utilized as a separation matrix, as well as for the creation of reaction zones through which proteins of interest are migrated and the products are detected. Nanogel separations in microchannels have the potential to greatly increase the throughput of protein analyses since multiple channels can be monitored simultaneously with only nanoliter consumption of sample for each analysis.
