Diatoms can produce a diversity of soluble and insoluble carbohydrates. Polysaccharides derived from diatoms are bio-polymers with multi-functional properties, such as the scavenging activity of free radicals and the prevention of oxidative damage. Polysaccharides can also inhibit the growth of tumor cells. In this study, the growth curves of diatom TPC14 (<i>Odontella sinensis</i>) at various culture media were established. Both the extracellular and intracellular carbohydrates of TPC14 were extracted and quantified using phenol-sulfuric acid method. Our results also showed that diatom TPC14 had strong scavenging activities on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical (90% scavenging) and 2,2’-azino-bis 3-ethylbenzthiozoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) radical (82% scavenging), when 250 ppm of intracellular polysaccharides was used.
