Fluorinated polyphosphazenes offer important advantages as biocompatible coatings for coronary stents and other biomedical devices. Recently, a new class of polyphosphazenes has been introduced, which integrates carboxylic or sulfonic acid and fluorinated moieties into a single macromolecular structure. Such fluorinated polyelectrolytes and ionomers can potentially offer solvent-free environment for manufacturing of the coating, efficient modulation of surface charge and hydrophobicity for improved biocompatibility and biofilm resistance, as well as modulated drug release capabilities. We investigated aqueous multilayer polyelectrolyte deposition technology as a convenient route to nanofabrication of fluorinated polyphosphazene surfaces. The resulting layer-by-layer assemblies displayed controlled film growth, modulated hydrophobicity, swelling, and protein adsorption characteristics. Their properties will be discussed in context of polyelectrolyte composition and nanofabrication processes parameters.<br/>
