Polymer chemists continue to search for polymer topologies that expand both fundamental and applied understanding of polymer science. We discuss here a new class of polymer topology termed <b><i>tapered bottlebrush polymers</i></b>. Traditional bottlebrush polymers are comprised of a linear polymer backbone with densely grafted side chain polymers of a single molecular weight. The tapered bottlebrush polymers discussed here are comprised of side chain polymers of systemically varied molecular weights designed to produce cone-shaped macromolecules. The synthetic method used to produce these polymers utilizes ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) in a sequential grafting-through polymerization. In addition to synthetic methods, rheological studies on these polymers will also be discussed.
