Curcuminoids are a class of photoactive organic compounds that have been found to have practical application in Photodynamic Drug Therapy (PDT).  To understand the practicality of a given curcuminoid in PDT the binding relationship to the protein Human Serum Albumin (HSA) at physiological pH 7.4 has been studied.  We have looked at the relationship through a variety of photophysical studies.  In particular, fluorescence quenching  and binding studies have allowed us to measure Ksv (Stern-Volmer constants) and K<sub>b</sub> (binding constants).  We have also studied the binding stoichiometry between the target drug and the protein. We are interested in studying how changing the hydrophilicity of the curcuminoid changes the mentioned binding parameters, and thus have designed a series of candidates for this purpose.  Future analysis includes analyzing more derivatives, affirming results and identification of thermodynamic parameters.
