Metal oxides are commonly found in air filtration materials to promote the adsorption and decomposition of toxic compounds such as chemical warfare agents (CWAs). In this study, diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier Transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) and mass spectrometry were used to develop a molecular-level understanding of the chemical interactions between a CWA simulant, dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP), and various metal oxides including TiO<sub>2</sub> and CeO<sub>2</sub>. These techniques were used to study how DMMP interacts with high surface area mesoporous metal oxides compared to their commercial nanoparticle counterpart. These studies provide a better understanding as to how the metal oxide structure affects both the binding and decomposition of DMMP at various temperatures.
