In this talk I will discuss the nature of the data driven chemical sciences in terms of the data lifecycle in an increasing automated and computerized world, looking for the possible connection and integrations. across some of the current chemical data and information silos.<br/><br/>The important roles of standards bodies, together with other interdisciplinary, transnational and trans-sectoral organizations, in providing an environment that supports the interactions between people and computers in the furthering of chemical research will be addressed. I will explore efforts focusing specifically in the areas of finding and relating information by defining and agreeing appropriate semantics. I will discuss the necessity of incorporating and coping with a degree of ambiguity critical to the multiple views of many key concepts that characterize the way in which chemists typically approach their subject. This ambiguity can be the cause of much confusion when chemists interact with other related disciplines and even between the pure and applied areas of chemistry itself. I will underscore the role of e-science and a critical enabler and driving force behind open, transparent and accountable research in chemistry.<br/><br/>As the final speaker of the symposium, I will aim to pull together, summarize and synthesize, the main themes of the symposium and the issues, ideas, solutions and perhaps the probable desperation, highlighted and illustrated by the symposium contributors. I will end with a call to action for the chemistry community (CINF, the ACS and beyond), to ensure that chemistry data is reliable, available, and useable, assessable, and general suitable for an era of increasing tension between local convenience and global concerns.
