The application of ICP-MS for clinical analysis of environmental chemical exposures to elements like lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium, and others has made significant progress in the past 20 years. Prior to this, the assessment of these environmental chemicals in people, was performed by methods other than ICP-MS. Recently, ICP-MS has become the major analytical technology for these assessments due to the lower instrument cost, ease of use, and rugged and reliable instrumentation. In addition, ICP-MS has multi-element capabilities and low detection limits needed for clinical and public health applications. As CDC has developed our ICP-MS capabilities, outside organizations, like the FDA and EPA, have had specific requests for public health applications. We have been able to respond to unique exposure incidents and address critical public health concerns and issues, as well as generate national reference range exposure data for both national policy and medical decision making. Some examples of these methods and applications are: cobalt and chromium for metal-on-metal hip implant issues, monitoring iodine sufficiency in a population, total and speciated arsenic for community exposure assessment and emergency response, and mercury speciation for exposure assessment and medical decision making.<br/>This presentation will describe the development, validation and implementation of novel clinical ICP-MS analytical methods with examples of their application to public health data needs and gaps, national surveys, data for national public health policy and guidance, community environmental chemical exposure investigations, or emergency responses.
