Poor R&D productivity, long timeline for converting a molecule into a drug and cost for introducing a new drug to market are the key issues resulting from the conventional current practices of Pharma R&D. These issues are the key causes for affordability and accessibility of medicines all across the globe. Challenging the conventional wisdom can address these issues for introducing value-added innovative new medicines to market.<br/><br/>Current conventional practices of drug discovery start with identification of a novel target and identification of patentable chemotype. It takes years before proof of concept in humans can be determined to assess potential of a given drug candidate to serve an unmet clinical need. Can such uncertainty and low probability of success be addressed by using a starting point derived from ancient traditional medicine with years of proven safety and efficacy? Current conventional practices can be termed “one size fits all” and as a result most marketed drugs work in select group of patients and a results patients are treated by trials and error. Can such “one size fits all” be replaced with genomics based patient selection and combination therapy for enhancing response rate for clinical outcome? Regulatory guidelines to satisfy safety and efficacy requirements also contribute to lengthy development times and cost for introducing new drugs. Leveraging recent advances in system biology, genomics and bioinformatics be leveraged for repurposing existing drugs and novel combinations of these drugs for new indications? Traditional practices of Pharma R&D rely on biology, pharmacology and chemistry. Can recent advances in semiconductor industry, bioinformatics and physics be leveraged for discovering and developing innovative products with clinical outcomes that are superior to current practices? The presentation will focus on leveraging these out-of-the-box solutions in pursuit of entrepreneurial dreams.
