Recently we reported on a ternary mixed oxide catalyst which showed low temperature CO oxidation activity in lean exhaust conditions without inhibition by hydrocarbons such as propene. Unfortunately, this CuOx-Co3O4-CeO2 catalyst (CCC) is a poor performer for hydrocarbon oxidation and cannot be considered as a stand-alone solution to low temperature automotive exhaust catalysis. In an effort to achieve both low temperature oxidation of pollutants and a reduction of total PGM content we have tested a 50% physical mixture of traditional Pt/Al2O3 and our CCC catalyst. Utilizing plug-flow reactor evaluation protocols in simulated exhaust and DRIFTS measurments we are able to show dual benefit of equivilent or increased performance at half of the total PGM content and significantly increased sulfur tolerance for the CCC component. These benefits are crucial to the lowering of expensive PGM content in automotive exhaust catalysts and the overall use of sulfur-sensitive mixed oxide catalysts.
