Monolithic porous bulk materials with deterministic nanoscale building blocks have many promising applications ranging from energy storage, filtration, and catalysis to high energy density physics. The exquisite resolution of two-photon polymerization direct laser writing opens the door to the fabrication of millimeter-sized objects with unprecedented three-dimensional morphology control, from nanoscale building blocks to macroscopic dimensions. Morphology control at the nano/meso/macro-scale determines the functionality of the material while control of the macroscale dimensions enables tooling free integration into complex functional devices thus greatly reducing costs, and improving throughput and reproducibility. Taking full advantage of this technology, however, is a multiscale materials design problem that requires detailed understanding on how the different length scales, from the molecular level to the macroscopic dimensions, affect each other. Here, we discuss the fabrication of a ‘macroscopic’ materials with sub-micron features.
