The production of chemicals from biomass offers promising opportunities to support the growth of the U.S. economy and improve the overall economic viability and sustainability of an integrated biorefinery. Given the diverse chemicals that can be produced from biomass, one of the biggest challenges is in prioritizing which products to further develop. This presentation will review the recent market drivers that have brought bio-derived chemicals to the marketplace, as well as outline the potential for future expansion of this emerging field. Additionally, we will detail on-going analyses at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory focused on determining the manufacturing costs and value-added along the supply chain, U.S.-specific competitive advantages, and the potential impact of biomass-derived chemicals on the marketplace itself. This talk will focus on our efforts in identifying products that can be made from biomass and the development of screening metrics critical to justifying the business case for each product. Throughout we will present specific case-studies of techno-economic analyses for chemicals from biomass, and will highlight the market/supply chain drivers and risks associated with these products.<br/>
