As a unique class of catalytic materials, Pt-based nanocages have recently been demonstrated with significantly enhanced catalytic activity and durability toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Because of their hollow interiors and porous walls, the Pt atoms on the inner surface can also participate in the catalytic reaction, leading to increase in both specific surface area and mass activity. By using different types of templates, the nanocages can be fabricated with different surface structures, including twin boundaries, and elemental compositions. In this talk, I will discuss two different types of templates based on Pd and Ag nanocrystals, respectively. Their resultant nanocages showed distinct behaviors in terms of activity and durability. By optimizing the experimental conditions, it is feasible to obtain a catalytic system that can meet the requirements for the commercialization of hydrogen-based fuel cell vehicles.
