Modernization has brought us a more interconnected world, and with that world, new pressures challenging the centralized medicine paradigm: globalization is increasing the risk of pandemics; climate change is extending the range of disease vectors; human encroachment on biological hotspots is exposing populations to novel microbes; modern food production practices are increasing antibiotic resistance and the risk of spillover events.<br/><br/>Emerging, field portable, user-friendly technologies, create an opportunity to meet these challenges at the point of need – wherever that may be. Here we discuss the availability of field-based molecular detection technologies, with a focus on the Biomeme handheld qPCR platform. The Biomeme platform allows for the quantitative assessment of DNA or RNA targets in a matter of minutes. This device can be used in nearly limitless applications such as the detection of pathogens, assessment of the microbiome, and detection of invasive species. We will discuss our perspective on how the use of an open architecture system can enable the rapid design and deployment of novel assays, providing the ability to monitor urgent novel outbreaks, while retaining the required simplicity for a point-of-need diagnostic.
