Chemistry is the art and science of stuffs. To create order in the mess of facts, classification concepts are required, such as of bonding,[1,2] of complexation[3] and of oxidation states.[3,4] Stability of materials means energy barriers against geometric separation of atoms hold together by electronic interactions, creation of materials means overcoming such barriers. The interactions have energetic, geometric (topological) and electronic aspects. The electronic Hamiltonian contains three terms of kinetic, nuclear (atomic core) attraction, and pair repulsion type, corresponding to covalent-delocalization, ionic, and correlative-dispersive bonding and anti-bonding. All three types together play synergic roles in the bonding of transition metal compounds of high oxidation states. We discuss cases of similar effective charges with quite different oxidation states, and cases of same oxidation state with quite different bonding mechanisms triggered by pair correlation effects. We show that the three concepts in the title line are related, though are highlighting different characteristics of bonding in several poly-chalcogen transition-metal complex molecules.
