The synthesis and characterization of saturated carbon(C)-boron(B)-nitrogen(N) heterocycles and their applications as potential H2 storage carriers and as molecular precursors to 2D graphene-like materials will be described. Specifically, I will highlight our recent efforts on understanding the mechanism of H2 release of these compounds and factors that influence their thermal stability. Furthermore, a bottom-up synthetic strategy toward structurally well-defined extended 2D materials containing boron, nitrogen and carbon with good control of elemental stoichiometry and bond connectivity using our BN heterocycles will be discussed as well.
