2D materials have generated considerable research interest over the past decade because of the new physical phenomena that emerge in these atomically thin framework, as well as their potential for impacting diverse sets of technologies including electronics, optoelectronics, sensing, and catalysis. Here, we will describe our recent success in the creation of hydrogen and organic-terminated group 14 graphane analogues, and how the optical, electronic, and thermal properties of these materials can be systematically controlled via surface functionalization chemistry.  Second, we will describe our recent studies on topological and magnetic phenomena in new exfoliatable group 14-containing layered intermetallics. Overall, these atomic-scale materials represent an intriguing and unexplored regime in materials design in which both surface functionalization and solid-state chemistry principles can be uniquely exploited to rationaly tailor new properties and phenomena.<br/> <br/>
