assessment of the dissipation rates of 14C-POEA in soil and water-sediment degradation studies initiated in 2012, metabolites were identified in soil as well as in water and sediment. Metabolism was extensive as evidenced by the formation of 14CO2 in both studies; ranging from 12 to 47% in the aerobic soil study and 10 to 15% in the aerobic aquatic study. Metabolism in the aerobic soil study was complex where four main classes of metabolites were identified by LC-MS and confirmed using a derivatization approach. All of the metabolites result from oxidative processes. The classes of metabolites consisted of tertiary amines containing both polyoxyethylene groups on nitrogen and terminally carboxylated aliphatic chains, secondary bis-polyoxyethylene amines and their corresponding mono- and di-carboxylate analogs, primary mono-polyoxyethylene amines and their corresponding carboxylated analogs, and di-carboxylated versions of polyethylene glycol. Metabolism in the aerobic aquatic study was not as complex as in the aerobic soil study as only tertiary amine metabolites containing both polyoxyethylene groups on nitrogen and terminally carboxylated aliphatic chains were identified as well as secondary bis-polyoxyethylene amine metabolites. This presentation will focus on discussion of the techniques used to identify metabolites in the aerobic soil and aerobic aquatic studies as well as the proposed pathways for metabolism of POEA in the two studies.
