Chemistry lab instructors often strive to use laboratory experiments that capture the students’ attention while also teaching them the skills and content knowledge intended by the experience. It can be very difficult, however, to develop these comprehensive lab experiences that integrate best practices and are also effective in achieving the intended outcomes. In this two presentation series we will present a backwards design process of developing a cross-curricular laboratory experience for the creation of biodiesel, as well as the research used to determine its effectiveness. In the first presentation we will detail how a backwards design process was utilized to develop the experience. This included the collection of baseline data on what was happening in the labs previously, use of this baseline data to identify learning objectives at multiple levels (experiment, course, and program) , and the development of a series of laboratory experiences grounded in CER best practices. The second presentation will present the cross curricular biodiesel lab experience and assessment data results used to determine its effectiveness on student learning objectives.<br/>
