Roanoke College reports on the offering of a course in Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the junior/senior level, with two semesters of organic chemistry as a pre-requisite.  Most enrolled students have prior coursework in cellular biology and/or biochemistry.  Biochemistry, Chemistry, and Biology are common majors.  While the course does not replace the pharmacology courses pre-health students will take after matriculation in a healthcare-related graduate program, it provides an introduction to that coursework. <br/><br/>The course covers a variety of pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry topics, including pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, assay development, receptor theory, and lead optimization.  The focus on drugs and drug development motivates extensive review and application of concepts from students’ prior general, organic, and biochemistry coursework.  Assessments focus on application of chemical and pharmaceutical principles, not on drug recall.
