The popularity of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) can be attributed to their use in electronic and biological technologies as well as to fundamental interest in their physical and chemical properties. Interactions between NCs and molecules are used to sensitize NCs and increase performance in NC devices. Continued advancement of these systems requires a better understanding of the complex processes occurring at the NC-molecule interface. Here we demonstrate the desired energy-transfer pathways can be controlled through adjustment of the NC properties such as their composition, environment, and structure. We can tune surface chemistry, providing a model system for characterization of NC interactions with molecular acceptors. Understanding these interactions will allow for the optimization of desired processes, such as energy or charge transfer. Ultimately, these simple molecule-NC models allow us to examine intermolecular processes, providing new information on interactions in assembled systems.
