Scientists are concerned about the consequences that greenhouse effect, climate change and fossil fuel depletion have on the environment. By combining in one process CO2 and methane, two abundant greenhouse gases, value-added products are produced. The primary objective of this project is to develop novel Ni-based catalyst (Ni-Pd bimetallic and Ni-Mo-Pd trimetallic) to enhance CO2 dry reforming with methane. The heterogeneous Ni-based bimetallic and trimetallic catalysts were synthesized via a wet incipient impregnation method to uniformly coat the metal salts to the pre-treated support (SiO2-Al2O3). The catalyst was dried in the oven at 80° C for two hours before subjected to the furnace to calcine at 450° C for five hours. The synthesized catalysts were tested for CO2 dry reforming with methane through a flow bed reactor to determine the catalyst performance including selectivity, conversion and stability. Pulse CO Chemisorption was performed to compare the number of active sites in each supported catalysts and Temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) was carried out to compare the reducibility of active metals in supported catalysts and to examine the alloy formation of the bi- and tri-metallic catalysts. This fundamental study will serve as guidance for us to understand the reaction pathway of CO2 dry reforming with methane.
