Two efforts to mimic different aspects of the secondary coordination sphere of enzymes will be discussed. The first is the use of proton donors and acceptors in the secondary coordination sphere of transition metal complexes to mediate multi-proton/multi-electron reactivity. The second will focus on the use of alkali and alkaline earth metals to impose an electric field potential at redox active sites. Our studies will focus on how these effects mediate catalysis and how they can be employed to design new catalytic systems.
