Few of us are lucky enough to be on the leading edge of transformational science.  One could argue that chemists who were examining “sub-micron colloids” and “semiconductor clusters” in the 1990’s found themselves very fashionable in the 2000’s with the advent of the National Nanotechnology Initiative in the US. In this talk I will describe how my laboratory, inspired by the crystal forms and colors of inorganic compounds, undertook a journey from synthesis to properties to biological applications of gold nanoparticles.  In parallel, science on the nanoscale became a fascinating point of discussions and concepts that undergraduate chemistry students could fruitfully explore.  I will also, then, discuss educational and outreach efforts to showcase the beauty of nanoscience to undergraduates from many disciplines.<br/>
