Phosphate represents a major nutrient in municipal wastewater. Without appropriate treatment, it may cause eutrophication to significantly degrade the quality of receiving water bodies. Ferrate(VI) has recently been reported to effectively remove phosphate from biologically treated municipal wastewater. Accompanied with ferrate(VI) reduction in water, the <i>in-situ</i> production of Fe(III) is capable of removing phosphate from water. In this study, we explore the underlying mechanisms through analysis of iron precipitates produced under different experimental conditions. Different analytical techniques (e.g. FT-IR and particle size distribution) are applied. Effects of pH and molar ratio of Fe(VI) to phosphate are particularly evaluated.   <br/>
