Fenton-like reaction is a promising technology for refractory wastewater treatment. However, the catalytic performance of heterogeneous catalysts still needs to be improved. Iron-based metal organic frameworks have emerged as appealing materials in the field of catalysis as the high surface areas and porous structures, which endow them with sufficiently exposed active sites and favorable mass transfer of the reactants. Here, Fe-based MOFs (MIL-88B-Fe, MIL-53-Fe, MIL-101-Fe and MIL-100-Fe) with different structures were employed as heterogeneous Fenton-like catalysts. The relationship between the catalytic activity and the structures of iron-based MOFs was explored. The activity of MIL-88B-Fe was the highest among these iron-based MOFs, which was about 2 orders higher than traditional heterogeneous Fenton-like catalysts (Fe2O3 and α-FeOOH) and even comparable to homogeneous Fenton reaction. The excellent activity of MIL-88B-Fe could be attributed to the abundant amount of active sites, flexible structure and the interaction of iron clusters and organic ligands, which increased electron density of iron, favoring the reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II). Furthermore, the effects of organic ligands on the catalytic activity of MIL-88B-Fe were explored. This work provides new insight into rational design of highly efficient MOFs-based Fenton-like catalysts.
