The widespread and growing use of nanoparticles makes the development of rapid, selective methods to measure nanoparticle size distributions and number concentrations essential. In single particle ICP-MS (sp-ICP-MS), signals (200 to 1000 μs in duration) measured from individual nanoparticles can be used to measure non-carbon based engineered nanoparticles with diameters of about 10 nm or more in about 3 minutes per sample. Some challenges related to accurate calibration in environmental and biological samples remain and will be considered. If the nanoparticle number concentration is sufficient, surfactant enhanced Capillary Electrophoresis-ICP-MS (CE-ICP-MS) allows the measurement of nanoparticles that are too small (contain too little analyte) to be measured by sp-ICP-MS because it does not require measurement of individual nanoparticles. Insight into the interactions of surfactant-nanoparticle interactions that are key to the success of surfactant enhanced CE-ICP-MS measurement of nanoparticle size distributions and number concentrations will be discussed. The capabilities and current limitations of sp-ICP-MS and surfactant enhanced CE-ICP-MS for nanoparticle measurements in environmental and biological samples will be explored.
