Production of coffee waste has been rapidly increased in South Korea during a last decade since the consumption of coffee has been dramatically increased instead of other tea. Spent coffee waste has been treated as a general waste and there are many studies to use the waste as raw material for adsorbent, biogas, and bioethanol. However most of the waste has been disposed without proper treatment and low or moderate toxic materials can be reaching from it. The spent coffee ground (SCG) could release several organic contaminants such as caffeine, tannin, and polyphenols. Current study includes the leaching test for a spent coffee ground and oxidative degradation. SCG contains caffeine and the leaching speed depends on the water temperature. A few advanced oxidation methods were tested for the degradation of caffeine. Fenton reaction and ozone/UV methods were successfully tested for the treatment of caffeine. The degradation rate was depends on the reaction conditions such as solution pH and ratio of oxidant to catalyst.
