Flavin mononucleotide (FMN) functionalized to the surface of colloidal titanium dioxide (TiO2) showed enhanced reactivity toward the reduction of chlorinated hydrocarbons including carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, trichloroethylene, and chlorobenzene. The process involved generating the catalyst in which FMN was reduced to FMNH2 by accepting two excited electrons from the conduction band of TiO2 during a photoirradiation process. Following the photoirradiation process, the FMNH2 was reacted with the chlorinated hydrocarbons in the dark with reactions taking place at ambient temperature and a pH of 6.5. Reduction rate constants were measured and were found to correlate to the number of chlorine atoms on the hydrocarbon, the standard two-electron reduction potentials (E2), and the bond dissociation energy (BDE). The results indicate that rational organization of FMN to mediate multi-electron transfer is highly effective toward the environmental remediation of toxic organohalides.
