The receding tide of tenure and proliferation of non-tenure track (NTT) faculty positions have periodically been in the national news spotlight in the United States in the last two decades. How has the academic employment landscape for chemists, specifically, changed in the past 20 years? How can institutional leaders provide pathways ensuring that their NTT faculty are positioned to both adeptly serve institutional missions and make the most of opportunities for professional growth? What is the American Chemical Society doing to assess changes in academic employment? How is the ACS serving its rapidly growing ranks of NTT faculty members? How are different demographic segments of the research and education workforce impacted by these changes over time? A quantitative case study from one institution with comparative data from a national database will be discussed.
