Gas chromatography equipped with vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopic detection (GC-VUV) is the newest in the pantheon of gas chromatography detectors.  Full range gas phase absorption in the 120 – 240 nm range is collected for analytes eluting from the gas chromatograph.  Based on its rapid acquisition of both qualitative and quantitative information, along with facile spectral deconvolution capabilities, GC-VUV is a highly complementary alternative to gas chromatography – mass spectrometry.  GC-VUV has been applied in wide ranging fields, including environmental, petrochemical, and food analysis.  Here, we present the application of GC-VUV for the speciation of terpene mixtures, essential oils, and vanilla extracts.  Featured is the potential to sacrifice chromatographic resolution, but still maintain excellent coverage for complex mixtures analysis, due to the ability to rapidly deconvolute coeluting signals.
