A series of 5, 7-dihydroxyflavanone derivatives were efficiently synthesized from readily available starting materials: trihydroxyacetophenone was protected and then condensed with commercially available substituted benzaldehydes. Ring closure and deprotection provide the title compounds in good to excellent yields without the need for extensive chromatography. Subsequently, their antimicrobial activities on Gram-negative, Gram-positive bacteria and yeast were evaluated. Most of the halogenated derivatives exhibited the best antimicrobial activity. Evaluated using a cell viability assay, the cytotoxicities of these compounds on HepG2 cells were low. This study suggests that halogenated flavanones might represent promising pharmacological candidates for further drug development.
