The development of reactions catalyzed by non-precious metals (Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) has been a major focus of both academic and industrial research. A major limitation to the application of many of these reactions is the lack of a diverse ligand set that can modulate the reactivity and selectivity of the catalyst. We recently discovered a new class of ligands for the nickel-catalyzed cross electrophile coupling that is allowing us to significantly expand the substrate scope for this reaction. Application of these ligands toward a diverse array of nitrogen heterocycles will be discussed along with some other strategies for optimizing reaction conditions.
