A facile one-pot three step synthetic route was designed and demonstrated with the synthesis of a series of perylene tetracarboxylic diester monoanhydrides (PEAs) with labile functional groups. Those structures were not accessible through the previously reported method. Moreover, using alcohol as the nucleophile in the first step enables the synthesis of unsymmetrically substituted PEAs. The procedure reported here would enable the integration of various side chains into PEAs which facilitates the introduction of new forms of self-assembling of perylene derivatives and the tuning and optimization of the bundle-stacked discotic liquid crystalline phase of PEAs.
