Mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs) have been used in advanced applications such as molecular motors and machines, nanoscale devices, and smart materials for drug delivery and imaging. Herein we describe the synthesis of one such type of MIM, [4]molecular necklaces ([4]MNs, 7-10), and their fluorescence properties. These compounds can be synthesized through the use of either triangular or square supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs, 3-6), via the self-assembly of rigid-rod dipyridine ligand 1 with M(en)(NO3)2 (M= Pd, Pt). To adorn the SCCs to make MNs, CB[n]-type containers can be incorporated into the complexes by one-pot or post complexation approaches as evidenced by 1H NMR, diffusion ordered spectroscopy, and ESI-MS. The photophysical properties of the MNs and their components revealed that the addition of one of these host containers resulted in an increased quantum yield.
