Metal-containing conjugated polymers are of great interest for charge transport through materials for devices such as solar energy conversion, energy storage, spintronics applications, organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), and photovoltaics. Many of these materials are closed-shell organic materials and those that are not tend to lack electron spin-spin coupling, insufficient radical generation which leads to defects, and inherent instability under ambient conditions. In this study the examination of poly(o-phenyleneethynylene) (PoPE) and polythiophene (pTh) semiquinone-containing (SQ) radical polymers, which are generated by the redox reaction between the quinone (BQ) polymer and a cobalt (II) 2-pyridylamino-N,N-bis(2-methylene-3,4-dimethylphenol) complex (Co(II)LA)2 to generate random copolymers of the BQ and SQCo(III)LA radical units. The compositions ratioof the amounts of BQ and to SQ were was varied by changing the stoichiometric ratioamount of Co(II)LA reacted with the BQ polymer and then calculating the spin concentration in the resulting polymers by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The properties of these materials were investigated using photophysical, electrochemical and magnetic techniques.
