Ever-increasing interest has been focused on the design and preparation of various dielectric materials for energy storage due to their potential applications in modern electronics. In recent decades, polymer dielectric has advantages such as relatively high electric breakdown strength, low dielectric loss, and light weight. We designed and prepared a series of Side-chain oligothiophene-containing polymers with polyolefins as polymeric backbones by means of ring-opening metathesis polymerization. We systematically studied how macromolecular architecture impacted the crystallinity, mechanical and dielectric properties of different polymers. Our results indicated that a higher terthiophene density improved dielectric permittivity, but it also in turn limited mechanical flexibility of materials. As a result, balancing the effects of polarizable group density and flexible, but robust architecture is critical in achieving novel dielectric polymers with higher energy density and charge/discharge efficiency.
