Lanthanide materials have been intensely researched and widely used in sensing and phosphor applications because of their unique luminescent properties. However, costly extraction and processing, lack of global supply diversity, and volatile political-economic relationships has caused concerns for sustainability of these critical materials. To counter such concerns, calls for alternative material design and effective use strategies for lanthanide based resources have been made. With this in mind, our research has focused on the synthesis and characterization of homometallic bismuth halide based complexes that produce solid-state ligand based emission through aggregation induced interaction. Upon trace lanthanide incorporation into these bismuth complexes, simultaneous ligand emission and sensitized Ln metal centered emission provide a means to achieve color tuning. These materials offer relatively uncharted paths for developing novel luminescent materials with effectively low percentage lanthanide doping, while retaining similar and even enhanced properties. The relationship between structure and luminescent behavior of a series of novel bismuth halide organic compounds and their lanthanide doped analogs will be discussed.
