Polymeric organic cathodes are an attractive candidate for next generation lithium ion batteries due to their potential for high gravimetric energy storage and stability in conjunction with traditional electrolytes. Despite recent advances, reported polymeric organic cathode materials have failed to incorporate a high degree of Li storage in a small molecular framework, resulting in low capacities relative to monomeric cathodes. In order to improve the gravimetric energy density of polymeric cathodes, the density of redox active units on each monomer much be increased. We synthesize a salt polymer of dihydroxyanthraquinone (LiDHAQS) capable of storing up to four Li ions per monomer. The as synthesized polymer has an experimental gravimetric capacity of 330mAh/g, a record for this class of material. The additional redox events responsible for added Li<sup>+ </sup>storage in LiDHAQS occurs between 3.0-3.6 V vs Li which is abnormally high for these types of material. LiDHAQS has an average discharge potential of 2.5 V vs Li that yields an energy density of 825 mAh/g. This corresponds to a 55% improvement over commercial lithium cobalt oxide cathodes. The high performance of LiDHAQS makes it a promising material for next generation Li<sup>+</sup> cathodes.
