2D nanomaterials (i.e., nanosheets) have properties distinct and complimentary to their spherical and rod-like counterparts. As such, the ability to tune the assembly of these materials and their chemical functionality provides a framework within which to not only understand structure-property relationships, but also to prepare the next generation of functional materials. We will report the assembly of graphene oxide (GO) at various interfaces and exploit theses assembly for the preparation of 1) Hollow spheres of GO by stitching together the nanosheets with a di-functional small molecule; 2) Polymer particles armored with GO nanosheets that can be covalently functionalized and assembled with inorganic nanoparticles; and 3) Janus GO nanosheets in which each face of GO is functionalized with a different polymers or small molecules. Initial results on such assemblies with 2D metal oxide nanosheets will also be discussed. The use of fundamental organic chemistry reactions thus gives access to unique structures and assemblies of interest for a broad range of applications.
