The role of interfaces and heterojunctions in heterogeneous catalysis and photocatalysis has long been a topical research area because these sites can often show fascinating and intriguing catalytic functions different from or superior to the individual component that forms them. In this presentation, I will show how one can construct different interfacial structures among metal – oxide, oxide – oxide and semiconductor – semiconductor systems and how these interfaces and heterojunctions impact catalysis from gas phase to aqueous phase reactions. Examples include CO oxidation over supported metal clusters and particles and hydrogen production from photocatalytic water reduction over heterostructured two dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides. The atomic structure and catalytic role of the interfaces were illustrated via in situ vibrational spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, aberration-corrected electron microscopy and supported by density functional theory calculations.
