In keeping with the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) priority on source reduction, emphasis on converting data into useful information, and providing knowledge on demand, the EPA’s Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) Program applied data visualization technology using the Qlik Sense software to the TRI dataset to develop unprecedented capabilities for users interested in TRI data reported from the food industry sector. As a result, the general public, for the first time, has the ability to access (online) and execute precise mapping and querying of food sector facilities and view trends on toxic chemical waste management, releases to the environment, and source reduction activities implemented or lack thereof, with the ability to analyze along with demographic and greenhouse gas reporting information. This resource also offers a link to the TRI Program’s Pollution Prevention (P2) tool, which contains more detailed information and connects users to the TRI database. This capability increases interactivity and visualization, and draws upon state-of-the-art technology to enhance the utility of TRI data in helping achieve Agency sustainability goals.
