More than billion people in this world lack access to safe drinking water which is free from pathogenic bacteria and toxic metals. World Health Organization estimates several million people, mostly children, die every year due to the lack of good quality water. Driven by the need, we will discuss our recent report on the development of novel multifunctional magnetic biochar, which can be used for highly efficient disinfection of pathogenic bacteria and removal of toxic metal. The design criteria for multifunctional magnetic biochar which has capability for environmental water purification will be discussed in details. Experimentally observed data demonstrate that antimicrobial peptide conjugated versatile multifunctional magnetic biochar has the capability to capture and completely disinfect pathogenic bacteria like E. coli O157:H7 bacteria from water. Observed data indicate that glutathione attached multifunctional magnetic biochar can be used to remove Hg(II) and As(III) and As(V) from infected Mississippi river water sample.
