The direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate from methanol and CO2 was studied by using 2-cyanopyridine as coupling agent over CexZr1-xO2 solid solution in the present work. A series of CexZr1-xO2 solid solutions with different Ce content were prepared and calcined at different temperatures. The best catalytic performance was achieved over the Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 catalyst calcined at 800 oC, with DMC yield of 0.44 mmol gcat-1 and DMC selectivity of 100% under the reaction conditions of 110 oC and 12 MPa. Characterization results of N2 physisorption, XRD, and NH3/CO2-TPD indicated that the CexZr1-xO2 solid solution with tetragonal ZrO2 structure favored the formation of acidic and basic sites, which then improved the activation of CO2 and methanol. The addition of 2-cyanopyridine to the system could improve the DMC yield dramatically.
