Criegee intermediates (CIs) in the gas-phase play key roles in the atmospheric HOx cycles and particle formations. However, due to the lack of direct experimental studies, the roles at the gas-aerosol interface remain unknown. Here we directly investigate the reactions of CIs with a series of compounds including atmospherically relevant carboxylic acids on the water/acetonitrile mixture surface by interface-specific mass spectrometry. We find compelling evidence that the observed reactions proceed at the gas-liquid interface. Our findings reveal unanticipated reaction pathways for CIs in the troposphere.
