Holey graphene is a structural derivative of graphene with arrays of through-plane holes, which have recently received significant attention for applications in sensors, catalysis, separation membranes, and energy storage. In this presentation, we will discuss our recent discovery that the presence of holes through the graphene lateral surface led to unique compressibility of this material. As a result, dry compressed holey graphene formed mechanically robust architectures of arbitrary shapes determined by the die used. Computational and experimental evidence suggested that air molecules rapidly escape from the inter-sheet space and there is a notable lack of volume rebounding after compression. Holey graphene discs prepared using this approach were found to be useful as electrodes for various energy storage devices such as supercapacitors and lithium-air batteries. An important attribute of this approach is the facile scalability for electrodes with ultrahigh areal mass loading with little effect on the intrinsic porosity. High areal mass loading, dry compressed holey graphene electrodes exhibited excellent gravimetric performance despite their significant thickness. This suggests that the holey graphene allows sufficient ion transport through the thickness of the electrodes as evidenced by the ultrahigh areal electrochemical performance exhibited in various energy storage platforms.
