Core/shell and core/satellite-like nanoparticles (NPs) represent an important type of composite nanomaterialwith intergrated properties from different components. Here we discovered a general synthesis of M/Au (M = Fe, Cu) core/shell and Ni/Au core/satellite nanoparticles. The metal NPs (Fe, Cu and Ni) were synthesized first as the seeds either from thermal decompistion of Fe(CO)5 or thermal reduction of Cu(acac) (acac = acetylacetonate) and Ni(acac)2. The Au coating was achieved by thermal reduction of HAuCl4 in presence of these metal seeds. The different lattice mismatch between Au and these metal NPs makes diversity to form core/shell or core/satellite structure. In the synthesis, the molar ratio of the metal NPs and Au precursors added in the reaction mixture was carried over to the final M/Au and determined the size and quantity of Au-satellite on Ni seeds. Moreover, these structures provide more active interface between metal and Au and the outside Au shells are effective for protecting metal from oxidation. The developed synthetic strategy could be extended to other multimetallic NPs systems for various functional applications.
